| Team: Conny Bear, Launcberry, G.vdm, Rudkin, Bloomfield, Thomas, Moody, W.Westell, L.westell, Titcome, M.vdm, pottinger, Harris | |
| With awful autumn behind the “Celery men” they looked towards a winning winter and to start the winning they entertained local rivals Steventon in the 2 nd round of the Berks and Bucks Cup. Fielding arguably their best team it was Marcham who took control of the early exchanges with good work from Titcombe and Michael vdm allowing the new strike partnership of L Westell and Launchberry to test the Steventon rear guard. Marcham were rewarded for their efforts when M.vdm was fouled on the touchline after teasing former Marcham man Bedford. The resulting free kick was sent sailing beyond the keeper from the in form Thomas. Despite a couple of good efforts Marcham were unable to increase their lead and after giving away some silly free kicks they allowed Steventon back into the game just before half time.Marcham came out of the blocks all guns blazing laying siege on the Steventon goal and it was no surprise that following a second foul by Bedford(yellow) on M.vdm they regained the lead. The resulting free kick fell to the big man Lauchberry about 20 yards out and after unleashing what could be described as a shot towards goal a ricochet of a defender took the ball into the back of the net! GOAL!!! Marcham continued to look dangerous through Westell, Titcombe and the dangerous Mad Dog Moody. The confidence flowing through the Celery was epitomised for the third goal. A throw from the commanding keeper Conny Bear, found Launchberry who's def touch located W.Westell and after a couple of shimmies he amazingly passed to his younger brother Luke on the edge of the box and he smashed home the winner. A lovely move that was somewhat reminiscent of Manchester United in the late 90's. With Victory sealed Marcham started to show boat, W.Westell looked almost back to his best, even Bloomfield cheekily tried a knee over the top, and still the Celery men pushed forward finding their fourth through another free kick from Thomas. A commanding performance that sets up an away trip to Mortimer. | |
| 29.10.05 | Marcham 1 Ardington 2 |
. Team: Conny Bear, Launcberry, Green, Bloomfield, Moody, Kigsbury, Harrison, Butler, Jeacock, Harris, Titcombe |
|
| Fielding a somewhat under strength team due mainly to pre marital tour of Birmingham in honour of Si Peedell, Marcham faced a repeat of last years Charity Shield final, and saw a chance to avenge the painful defeat from that night in May. From the start, Ardington looked dangerous coming forward, their physical midfield winning a lot of the early exchanges. Twenty minutes in, the pressure told as Ardington took a deserved lead. This seemed to be the spur Marcham needed, and the black and white army responded superbly, hitting back shortly before the half time break. Unfortunately, half time wasn't the only break Marcham faced, as shortly into the second half, Captain Nathan Kingsbury broke his right foot in an innocuous looking challenge with his Ardington counterpart Alan Haines. The introduction of Gary 'Horse' Harris galvanized Marcham, but Ardington, always looking dangerous on the counter attack, forced a second, and ultimately winning, goal. A good battling performance from the Celerymen, with debutants Leon and goalkeeper Conybear looking very much part of the managements future plans. On to next week, and the massive local derby versus Steventon, in which only a win will do!' | |

Marcham made the trip through the gallops into “The valley of the Racehorse” for the 1 st round of the North Berks cup with seven members of the team that won on the opening day of the season absent. With G.vdm, W.Westell and Thomas back in the team after a spell out “The Celery” could still only manage a squad of 12 and looked suspect if injuries occurred. With Lambourne Kicking like mules expectedly it was only a matter of time before Will Westell was clattered resulting in him being rushed to Equine Horse Hospital. Despite the long face, surgery was refused and trip to Swindon General Hospiral for stitches followed. Marcham had the better of the first half with the Marv and Luke Westell coming close only to be denied by their own shooting. At H/T Manager less Marcham regrouped and some inspirational talk of honour and glory by Goalkeeper Launchberry rallied Marcham's Gladiators into battle. Sadly again injury took is toll within ten minutes of the restart and with no substitutes Marcham were forced to soldier on with 10 men. This consolidated the Marcham effort and with a change of tactics they looked to exploit Lambourne on the break. For most of the second half Marcham expectedly had to defend against the leagues most potent attacking team but looked comfortable, with Green holding Moonies reigns and Launchberry plucking every shot out of the air with the ease of a top class NB goalkeeper. For 40 minutes Marcham held on and should have probably stole the match in the closing moments but tired legs failed to capitalise. In Extra time, Marcham could sense an upset but this sensation was shattered by a lucky Lambourne break that saw the ball ricochet of a Lambourne player following a Marcham clearance into the back of the net. With the deadlock broken the Celeries head did not drop and with some strong encouragement from the sidelines they fought on. Unfortunately the 10 men of Marcham were punished moments later when Lambourne capitalised on their first one on one. At this stage their was a monstrous task for Marcham to overcome but still the never give in attitude was displayed and they were rewarded with a late consolation after good interplay from G.vdm, L.Westell capped of my Edwards. Despite the defeat much cam be taken from this game and if the same attitude, effort and commitment can continue Marcham will have no problem propelling themselves up the league into a European Palce. |

| 8.10.05 | Benson Lions 1 Marcham 5 |
| Team:Launchbury, Bloomfield, Thomas, Green, Jeacock, Jackson, W.Westell, Mudie, Rudkin, L.Westell, M.Van de Mortel (subs) Edwards, Vaughan, Armstrong, Harrison, Pottinger | |
| 'Looking to bounce back from last weeks disappointing defeat at Blewbury, manager Tim Woods made several changes to the starting line up in his search to tame the Lions of RAF Benson. Almost immediately those changes paid dividends as Matt Thomas, playing in his first competitive game of the season, stepped up to a free kick some 40 yards out after 10 minutes. Left footed he sent the ball goalwards, sailing precisely over the Benson keeper's head and into the back of the net. Some neat football from the mighty Marcham followed, with the midfield creating chances, and the wing backs causing the ageing benson full backs problems. The new strike partnership of Luke Westell and Mike Van de Mortel always looked dangerous, and it was only a matter of time before more goals followed. Unfortunately, due to a mix up of 'Carry on' proportions in the Marcham defence, Benson managed to pull level on the half hour, and so it remained going into the half time break. No change of 'style' for Benson in the second half, long ball time and again to the 2 big strikers and trying to intimidate the youthful Marcham side to no avail, their only threat seem to come in the rotund form of their number 7 and his long throws. Before long, normal service was resumed and the industrious Mike Van de Mortel got his reward with a superbly taken goal, soon followed by further strikes from Luke Westell and half time substitute Ben Harrison. A driving, mazy run from the returing Will Westell saw him bundled over in the area, the 11 year old referee pointing immediately to the spot. Westell senior picked himself up, dusted himself down and proceeded to put the Penalty into the car park. (3 in a row missed) Another for Van de Mortel, capping a Man of the Match performance, made the game a formality, and a re-run of last years Charity Shield final beckons if Ardington can overcome Stanford in their first round clash. Let's just hope they don't send the Benson squaddies to Iraq....we might still lose the war!' | |

With the pride of fortress Marcham at a stake, Marcham were asking themselves some serious questions before the game, do you want to win and how much to you want to win? These questions were answered brilliantly, straight from the start there was aggression, desire, commitment and a belief that the game was nothing but a home victory. Marcham played some lovely football despite the heavy undulations caused from the under ground heating. Michael van de Mortel epitomised Marchams motivation, box to box, 110% in tackles, providing chances, clearly reminiscent of his older brother. Unfortunately for him and Marcham he could only do this for 25 minutes before he ran out of fuel and at 19 serious questions have to be asked! Replacing was debutant Ross Butler who was tasked with providing an exemplary service to the forwards. At half time Marcham were clearly the better team but had nothing to show for all their hard work. The second half was more of the same, reminiscent of a New Orleans high way but still Marcham could break free from the Gridlock despite their endeavour. With 20 minutes to go senior van de Mortel was brought on to find that elusive goal, but it was not he who was to deliver, Big Ben Harrison chested down a diagonal ball form the Butler and curling a beauty into the top corner. GOAL! With only five minutes to go Marcham handled the pressure well, indicating a maturing side with great expectations for the season ahead |

| 17.09.05 | Saxton Rovers (0-2 L) |
| Team: Davie, Green, Bloomfield, Rudkin, Kingsbury, Harrison, Morris, Cousins, M.vdm, Gassan, Jeacock, L.Westell, m Edwards | |
| On a day of Collisions the Celery Men crashed to their first defeat of the season at the hands of their local rivals Saxton Rovers. With both teams likely to contest for the title much was at stake including “bragging rights” on the days night out and the chance to go Top of the league. Despite much emphasis on the physical battle needing to be won, Marcham were slow of the blocks, they lacked aggression and struggled to impose themselves at fortress Marcham. Disappointingly they went behind from a poorly defended corner that should have been cleared on several occasions, typical schoolboy errors. At his stage the “Morland Road Firm” began to erupt trying desperately to rally the troops, their bellowing was rewarded when an intimidated Saxton defender blundered allowing Gassan to square for Harrison, who say his shot saved by the Giant of a keeper and Marcham went into the H/T 0-1. With only one goal separating the teams much was still to play for and the green sticks started the half well. Little changed through out the half, both teams found in difficult to find opening with much credit being given to the defence. When a strike did come it fell to the Saxton, with the ball crashing against he bar, bouncing down on the line. From this Marcham attacked with the fluidity of water and were unlucky not to equalize when Gassans shot was cleared of the goal line. With tired legs approaching Marcham gifted Saxton their second and the game was lost. | |
| 10.9.05 | Colshill (4-4D) |
| Team: Jackson, Green, Bloomfield, Rudkin, Kingsbury, Harrison, Morris, Cousins, M.vdm, Harris, Jeacock, G.vdm | |
After a gladiatorial performance against Lambourn Marchams legions were faced with another stern test at the hands of newly promoted Colshill. With injuries, holidays and other commitments interrupting events Marchams resources were tested with Big Ben Harriosn making his 1 st team debut and only a cripple on the bench. However it was Marcham who started brightest with some diligent interplay between Cousins, Morris and M van de Mortel. With Kingsbury ruling the midfield, Harrison pressured the Colshill defence into error allowing an ever-grateful M.van de Mortel to pounce. GOAL! More hard work from Harrison allowed Cousins to sneak in for Marchams second despite M.van de Mortels best efforts for his second. Marcham found their third when a strike from Big Ben hit the hands of the defender and the referee kindly offered Kingsbury a chance to score from the penalty stop. GOAL With only 10 minutes to the break and Marcham cruising a lapse of concentration and some diabolical refereeing allowed Colshill back into the Game. 2-3 HT. The second half created little in the way of goal scoring opportunities but is was Marcham that seized the opportunity when it appeared. Colshill, but not Cousins gave up a searching Souness type ball from Moody. He found time and space to square for Geacock to unleash a venomous drive form 2 yards. Again Marcham were punished for poor concentration and discipline in the closing minutes allowing Colshill to share the spoils. |

| The horse racing fraternity rides hard and plays hard, but away from the excitement of the race track, the 2005/2006 NBFL season unfolded for Marcham FC against Lambourne. Despite the good preseason work behind the scenes, Marchams squad depth was tested as early as this fixture through holidays, work and injuries. The 13 that did represent the Celery were rewarded with the chance to wear the new kit. Looking every bit as part of the Stad de Lappi outfit Marcham began the match, confident, motivated and with a belief that a Marcham win was to be the result. As each side probed for openings Marchams best opportunities came from breaks down the channels and were unlucky not to be rewarded through good work from Gassan and Jeacock. Marcham were rewarded for their efforts when the ball was played up to the striker Michael van de Mortel who chested neatly to Steve Morris who delightfully sliced the Lambourne defence open, allowing Gassan the chance and with quality reminiscent of Henrik Larsson, he blissfully opened his seasons account. GOAL! From this Lambourne galloped forward and were rewarded when a good move down the right was centred resulting in the equalizer. A moment later with H/T approaching Tommy Cousins slight of foot caused him to be fouled just outside the box and a confident Gassan stepped up and unleashed a free kick that took a slight deflection, cheekily nut-meging the Keeper. An inspirational team talk at half time motivated the mighty Marcham further and despite a shaky start to the 2 nd half Marcham managed to hold on despite some hostile tackles and banter from the opposition. | |
